Bronze Dancer by Chiparus
Wonderful French bronze lady dancing with a deer and mounted on a portorro marble base which measures nearly 20 inches long (50cm) and 5.5 inches (14cm) wide. Total height is 16.5 inches (42cm) to her top hand. She has a silvered patina with gold toga and hair detail and a gold deer. Mysteriously she is signed D.H. Andin instead of D.H. Chiparus although he was undoubtedly the artist. This mystery is by no means the first I have encountered with Chiparus pieces over the years, and the widow of Chiparus states in the Chiparus book by Alberto Shayo, that Chiparus himself did not believe he received all the commission and royalties due to him, and I believe one of the main reasons was that so many of his pieces were unsigned, or incorrectly signed (as this one). The base is also signed Etling which was the principal foundry used to produce his work. Condition is extremely good.
