This section includes various French Galalith and Celluloid costume jewellery items. French (and German) Galalith differs from the American in as much as it contains casein (a milk protein). They are all an early bakelite type material which was very much in use during the deco years for the production of inexpensive and stylish modernist jewellery. The outbreak of the second world war lead to the cessation of production of galalith for civilian use, because casein was in short supply. Galalith was very useful for the mass production of articles because it did not blunt lathes as was easily polished. It was also durable and could be produced in an amazing range of colours and even be made to resemble tortoishell, pearlised, marbled and glittery products. Most pieces were made in the 1930s and are new/old unsold stock. Some other items may be more recent - see descriptions.

Huge Galalith Deer Brooch
Very stylish 1930s brooch measuring 5 inches (12.5cm) high, with a black galalith body, brown horns and a diamonte eye. Fitted with a rolling safety clasp and in as-new condition being old/new stock.

French Shargreen Galalith Earrings
These beautiful modernist, Bauhaus style earrings are made of galalith and were made in the 1930s. They have a chromed metal bottom plate with shargreen effect central panel. They are old/new stock and are therefore in very good condition. Each measures 3 inches long and are for pierced ears and, as they are galalith they are very light to wear. These are part of a earrings/necklace set, also viewable on page 3.

Large Horse Head Brooch
Large 1930s tortoiseshell celluloid brooch with coiled wire mane and in excellent condition. Measures approx. 2.5 inches high (6cm).

French Bells Necklace
Huge brown, wood effect celluloid and brass bells necklace, made in France in the 1930s. Some wear to the back of the celluloid and a couple of marks to the front but basically in good used condition. A real stunner when worn.

Large French Parrot Brooch
1930's, Red galalith and chrome and diamonte parrot. It measures a large 2 inches (5cm) square. Fitted with a roll safety clasp and in excellent condition.
